World's top PC seller Lenovo of China expands sales and market share
CHINA’S Lenovo Group Ltd, the world's No. 1 personal computer seller, expanded sales and market share in the fourth quarter, despite what was the seventh consecutive quarter of declining sales in the global PC market, a US-based research firm said today.
Among the top five PC vendors, Lenovo and Dell Inc increased sales in the quarter while Hewlett-Packard Inc, Acer Inc and ASUS faced dropping sales, according to Gartner Inc.
Worldwide PC sales totaled 82.6 million units in the fourth quarter, a 6.9 percent decline from a year ago, according to Gartner.
"Strong growth in tablets continued to negatively impact PC growth in emerging markets," said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. "But we increasingly believe markets such as the US market have bottomed out as the adjustment to the installed base slows."
In emerging markets, consumers most likely connect via a smartphone, and their first computing device is a tablet, analysts said.
By the end of the fourth quarter, Lenovo took the lead with an 18.1 percent market share, followed by HP's 16.4 percent, Dell's 11.8 percent, Acer's 7.8 percent and ASUS' 6.5 percent, according to Gartner.
Acer’s and Asus's rankings remained unchanged compared with a year ago. Both companies have focused more on tablets and their fourth-quarter results clearly confirmed their strategic focus.
Lenovo aims to challenge Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics through innovation and expansion in non-PC sectors such as smartphones, tablet computers and TVs, according to Yang Yuanqing, chairman of Lenovo.
At present, Lenovo ranks No. 2 in the market combining PCs and tablets, following Apple. It aims to surpass the US tech giant soon, Yang added.
