Xbox One to debut in September

MICROSOFT Corp’s Xbox One will debut on the Chinese mainland in September as the first game console to be officially sold in the domestic market where console sales have been banned for more than a decade, the company and its local partner said yesterday.

The debut is a “milestone” by Microsoft and BesTV, which formed a joint venture called E-Home Entertainment Development Co in Shanghai’s pilot free trade zone in 2013. The venture will be in charge of Xbox One manufacturing and sales in the mainland market.

No details of the Xbox One pricing in the domestic market were available yesterday but some industry sources said it would cost 4,999 yuan (US$799). The price of the Xbox One on a Chinese auction website was 3,200 yuan without an official guarantee.

The Xbox One’s offering of games, entertainment, education and fitness content will help the partners penetrate the home entertainment system market to meet surging demand for games and video contents in China as nearly half a billion people play games, more than the entire population of North America.

“The launch of Xbox One here will see it as the first-ever game console with OTT (over-the-top) functionality in China,” said Zhang Dazhong, chairman of the joint venture.

OTT is the latest technology and offers services from video content, online shopping to games to consumers through the Internet.

BesTV, a new media subsidiary of the Shanghai Media Group, will develop video games and provide distribution support for locally produced Chinese video game content globally, said Zhang, who is also vice president of SMG.

More than 5 million Xbox One consoles have been sold in 13 countries since its global debut at the end of last year — the most successful Xbox launch in history. But its sales still lag the 7 million units sold by Sony’s PlayStation 4.
