Xbox One to go one sale in Shanghai's FTZ

MICROSOFT Corp's XBox One will debut in Shanghai's free trade zone in September through its local partner BesTV, making it the first game console officially sold on the Chinese mainland in nearly 15 years.

The XBox One will be sold through a joint venture in the FTZ.

Global game market revenue reached US$70 billion in 2013 with game console sales contributing US$25.4 billion, according to Zhang Dazhong, chairman of the joint venture.

Since 2000, firms have been banned from selling foreign game consoles on the Chinese mainland as a policy to protect children from violent and sexual content. But firms can test new businesses in the FTZ as authorities have lifted the ban in the zone.

Sony's PlayStation 4 tops worldwide game console sales with 7 million units sold, followed by Xbox One at 5 million units.
