Xiaomi enters home air purifier sector
SMARTPHONE maker Xiaomi Corp will start selling a home air purifier because Chinese consumers are worried about the worsening air quality and its harmful effects on health, the Beijing-based company said yesterday.
The new air purifier, which can be remotely controlled by smartphone, is expected to help Xiaomi expand its product portfolio from smartphones, TVs, routers and smart wristbands, industry insiders said.
The purifier costs 899 yuan (US$145), up to one-third the price of overseas models like Sharp and Blue Air purifiers, said Lei Jun, chairman and chief executive of Xiaomi.
“We can’t find quality air purifiers with reasonable prices in the market today. That’s the reason why Xiaomi wants to do it,” Lei said at a press conference in Xiaomi’s Beijing headquarters.
Chinese consumers are suffering a worsening air quality because of pollution with record smog levels in cities including Beijing and sometimes in Shanghai.
The purifier can alert users when its filter needs to be replaced. Each filter, which can be used for three to six months, costs 149 yuan.
