Xiaomi plans 18 flagship stores by 2014 to show phones, TVs it sells online

XIAOMI Corp said it will open 18 flagship stores by year's end for potential buyers and smartphone owners to try out its smartphones and TV sets as it extends its service to the offline realm.

The Beijing-based company opened its first flagship store in Shanghai over the weekend to step up its after-sale service after the company predicted annual sales will reach 30 billion yuan (US$4.8 billion) this year, more than double last year's 12.6 billion yuan.

The Shanghai store is the seventh flagship store nationwide, and by next year, the company will have around 550 service locations and repair centers covering about 400 cities nationwide, said the company's vice president, Li Wanqiang.

"We don't have plans to sell our products directly through these outlets as we want to ensure those who order through our official website get orders delivered promptly," he said in an interview in Shanghai over the weekend.

Li said the company sells an average of 2 million models each month, still a small fraction of the country's booming smartphone market.

Its flagship stores, together with other authorized repair centers, will also sell authorized accessories for Xiaomi models, along with providing maintenance for its smartphone owners and allowing buyers to pick up products for their online orders.

Xiaomi added a smart TV model and a set-top box to complete its product lines earlier this year after it completed a new round of financing, leading to a valuation of the 3-year old company at US$10 billion.
