Xiaomi plans assault on tablet market
Xiaomi will launch a tablet computer to challenge Apple's dominant market position, the company said today in Beijing.
The company plans to emulate its success in the smartphone market, where a combination of competitive pricing and online promotions have helped Xiaomi record faster growth than its rivals, said CEO Lei Jun.
The Xiaomi Pad features a 7.9-inch screen, 8-mega-pixel rear camera and an advanced graphic chip for games. It will cost 1,499 yuan (US$246) for a 16 gigabyte model and 1,699 yuan for a 64 GB model.
Xiaomi Pad is designed with standards in line with Apple's iPad Mini, which costs from 2,888 yuan for 16 GB.
By the end of the first quarter, Apple led the global tablet market with a 32.5 percent share. Samsung followed at 22.3 percent and ASUS had 5 percent, according to International Data Corp, a US-based research firm.
Lei said the Android market has “great market potential” for Xiaomi.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi also introduced its second generation Xiaomi TV in Beijing. It costs 3,999 yuan and features bluetooth speakers and a 49-inch 4K screen. It will go on sale on May 27.
