Xiaomi to set up unit for film production
XIAOMI Corp will set up a subsidiary to run the “business of film production” this year after forecasting to sell fewer smartphones than expected last year.
Li Wanqiang, Xiaomi’s co-founder, will lead the new film production business and the company’s marketing division after taking a year off to rest. But no timeframe has been given for the subsidiary to be set up.
“I am glad to come back and lead Xiaomi’s new business of film production,” Li, author of a book on Xiaomi’s strategy and success on Internet promotion, said yesterday on his Weibo account.
Expanding into film production will improve Xiaomi’s brand awareness and better tap the vendor’s huge user base, according to analysts.
Beijing-based Xiaomi had expected to sell 80-100 million smartphones in 2015, up from 60 million units in the previous year. But the company now expects to sell under 80 million units last year, according to market watchers.
Rival Huawei Technologies sold over 100 million phones in 2015 to rank No. 1 in the domestic market.
It’s a “very, very, very competitive” market in China, said Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s chief executive.
