ZTE aims for No. 5 cell phone maker globally

SHENZHEN-BASED ZTE Corp expects to overtake Sony Ericsson to become the world's No. 5 mobile phone maker by the end of this year - the first Chinese firm to feature among the Top 5.
ZTE, now the No. 6 handset maker globally, will also expect to "be close" to the No. 4 position held by Motorola, the Shenzhen-listed firm said.
By the end of the second quarter, Finland's Nokia led the market, followed by Samsung, LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson, according to Gartner Inc, a United States-based research firm.
"We saw an explosive growth in the first half, both in the domestic and overseas markets, especially in the CDMA sector," said Xiong Hui, vice general manager of ZTE's handset division.
In the first six months, ZTE's handset sales totaled 27 million units, a 36 percent surge annually. It sold 5.92 million units of CDMA phones, double last year's level.
Comparatively, Sony Ericsson's sales in the second quarter plunged 41 percent to 13.6 million units.
By the end of June, Nokia led globally with a 36.8 percent market share, followed by Samsung's 19.3 percent, LG's 10.7 percent, Motorola's 5.6 percent and Sony Ericsson's 4.7 percent, according to Gartner.
