ZTE bets on 4G for smartphones
ZTE Corp expects its 4G mobile phone sales to account for half of smartphone sales after the issue of 4G licenses by the Chinese government.
A total of four smartphones made by ZTE, Huawei Technologies, Sony and Samsung have been approved by the government for sale after Chinese telecommunication providers like China Mobile receive the 4G licenses.
“The 4G brings us a unique opportunity to develop the smartphone business,” said Lu Qianhao, general manager of ZTE handset marketing strategy department, yesterday.
Lu also projected 4G phone sales to account for half of Shenzhen-listed ZTE’s smartphone sales. The world’s fifth-largest smartphone maker, ZTE was the first company to receive regulatory approval to sell 4G phones in China.
China is widely expected to issue 4G licenses by the end of this year.
ZTE’s Grand Memo handset was approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to run on the 4G TD-LTE (time division-long term evolution) standard. The flagship model features in China Mobile’s commercial 4G test.
