Zuckerberg plans 2nd visit to China
FACEBOOK'S founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg may visit Shanghai in September, a United Nations organization said yesterday.
Latest news reports have said Zuckerberg, 27, planned his second China visit by the end of this year, which was seen as a move by the world's biggest social network website to enter the world's biggest Internet market. During an earlier visit to the country the media had reported he planned to visit China again this year.
Top global chief executives and business leaders will be in Shanghai to attend a forum of emerging industries held by United Nations Industrial Development Organization in September. Fifty executives from 20 countries have confirmed they would attend the forum, according to Liang Dan, an official at UNIDO.
Zuckerberg, along with top executives from Honeywell and Boeing, were invited but it's still unknown if he had confirmed his Shanghai visit, according to UNIDO.
Zuckerberg visited China at the end of 2010 and met with representatives of the top Internet firms in China, including Baidu, Sina, Alibaba and Tencent - a trip which was widely reported in the media and online forums.
Rumors have been swirling that Facebook, which is not currently available in the Chinese mainland, may team up with Baidu to facilitate the American company's entry into the market. Zuckerberg aims to debut services in China which has more than 400 million online users.
The Facebook wave heated up in China after Renren.com, which was dubbed as the "Facebook of China", launched an initial public offering in the United States last month.
