iPad Mini debut draws many fans

Queues formed in Apple stores in Shanghai today, the first day iPad Mini went on sale in the Chinese mainland. Unlike previous releases, many in the crowds were women who were drawn by the tablet's super mobility and smaller size.

The iPad Mini with an eight-inch screen costs 2,498 yuan (US$397) for 16 gigabyte capacity, 3,288 yuan for 32GB and 4,088 yuan for 64 GB.

Scores of consumers queued up before the Apple Store on Huaihai Road M. opened. They all made online reservations beforehand. One woman surnamed Yang bought two iPad Minis, one for herself and one for her friend.

"It fits well in my LV and Chanel handbags. The iPad is too big for small bags," said Yang, who already owns an iPad and an iPhone 4S. She said she would carry iPad Mini more often and leave iPad at home.

Another young woman, named Tiffany, told Shanghai Daily that she would play games on iPad Mini as she commutes by Metro. "The old iPad is too bulky," she said.

Also today, a new version of iPad featuring Retina display was released to the mainland market, priced 3,688 yuan to 5,288 yuan. It is a Wi-Fi only model that supports cellular networks not yet available on the mainland.

Right now, only those who made online reservations can buy iPad Mini or iPad 4 in the three Apple Stores in Shanghai. Consumers without a reservation can buy iPads at Gome and Suning outlets.
