iPhone 4 sales to start Saturday
CHINA Unicom and Apple Inc announced yesterday that the iPhone 4 will be sold in the domestic market on Saturday in a move that is expected to boost smartphone sales for the United States firm and the telco's 3G business.
Users can buy the iPhone 4 by putting down a deposit from 5,880 yuan (US$864) as an upfront fee with a two-year contract in China Unicom's stores or by buying the device from 4,999 yuan for the 16-gigabyte version in Apple's stores.
These prices are much lower than the more than 10,000 yuan people were paying in the gray market for iPhone 4 smuggled from the UK or Hong Kong.
China Unicom, Apple's partner carrier on the Chinese mainland, has already more than 50,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4 since last Friday, it said. Suning, China Unicom's sole iPhone 4 distribution partner, said it had accepted 60,000 pre-orders in its 300 stores nationwide.
Meanwhile, Apple also said yesterday that it would sell the iPhone 4 without a contract and deposit requirement in its retail stores on Friday.
Customers who buy the iPhone 4 at an Apple Store will receive free personal setup service, it said. Apple has a store in Beijing and Shanghai. A new one, located in Hong Kong Plaza on Huaihai Road in Shanghai, is set to open today.
The high-end smartphone, which features video calling, a high-resolution display, improved screen image and a 5 megapixel camera, is expected to help China Unicom develop 3G services and catch up with bigger rival China Mobile, industry insiders said.
