iPhone 4S domestic debut soon

APPLE'S iPhone 4S is expected to make its debut on the Chinese mainland as early as January 6, media reported yesterday, citing sources from Apple resellers and China Unicom.

The new iPhone model will sell from 5,880 yuan (US$919) with a China Unicom's contract package, according to the sources.

Apple China and China Unicom both declined to comment on the actual debut date yesterday.

But China Unicom, Apple's sole partner for the iPhone, said the new iPhone 4S would be available before the Spring Festival, which starts on January 23.

Kaifu Lee, Innovation Works' founder and former Google China's president, predicted good sales of iPhone 4S generally.

"It will sell good but maybe not so good as the iPhone 4," Lee said on his Sina Weibo account. "People who like showing off won't like it because there's no great difference between the new model and iPhone 4 in appearance."

Buyers who couldn't wait for the official debut of the iPhone 4S in the mainland chose to purchase it from overseas markets, including Hong Kong.

Compared with iPhone 4, the new iPhone 4S provides an enhanced camera and a voice search function called Siri, which is designed to answer users' questions by searching answers on the Internet. But Siri now supports English not Mandarin.
