Abbott pledges strict quality control at new plant
GLOBAL health care company Abbott said it expects to introduce new infant nutrition products to the Chinese market over the next few years, following completion of a manufacturing plant in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, in late 2013.
In a market where 17 million infants are born each year, vice president of Abbott's nutrition supply chain, John Ginascol, said the company is tapping the latest technology to deliver new products to Chinese consumers.
To ensure consistent quality from the start of manufacturing to the end consumers, Abbott carries out strict protocols for employees, suppliers and retail distributors. It will do the same at its new US$230 million plant in Jiaxing.
The company will also ensure the state-of-the-art manufacturing site will have the same quality control system used in Abbott's other 12 plants worldwide.
"Quality is the essence of our products," Ginascol said.
Abbott also customizes products to suit the needs of Chinese consumers. In some cases, Abbott invests in suppliers to help them improve quality by helping them secure new analytical testing equipment.
"By enhancing the quality of the supplier, we can achieve a win-win situation where we can benefit from high-quality ingredients and suppliers, with the upgraded quality, will receive more orders," he added.
Local employees go through training that focuses on key areas such as gowning practices, hygiene, and avoiding intervention in the product stream.
Each year certifications of Abbott's employees must be renewed due to changes in local regulations. This ensures they are familiar with the latest requirements, Ginascol said.
The company's analytical divisions work closely with various testing organizations on methodologies, procedures, and equipment to meet and exceed local food safety specifications before final shipment, he said.
In addition to its own distribution channels, Abbott works with local distributors, which are strictly monitored.
"We choose distributors carefully, and the process is not much different from that of a supplier. It's part of our quality system because we want to ensure our quality is there on the shelf," Ginascol pointed out.
Ginascol was in Shanghai to address the China International Food Safety and Quality Conference held on November 7 and 8.
"We are working more closely with local government agencies, industry entities and the academia community to push forward to eliminate the difference of the different standards that various countries have for nutrition products," he said.
Ginascol added that standardization of the testing and analytical standards will improve the quality across the nutrition product industry.
