Ashland launches local plant

Ashland Inc, an American specialty chemicals company, yesterday launched a US$60 million gelcoats plant in east China to serve industries from wind energy to yacht building.

The plant in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, has an initial annual capacity of 10,000 tons of gelcoats and 2,000 tons of adhesive products. It’s designed for further expansion.

Gelcoats are specialty reins that help to improve the appearance of fiberglass products and to protect structural layered materials from corrosion. Gelcoats are used in products ranging from yachts, bathtubs, high-speed trains to wind blades and storage tanks.

Ted Harris, a senior vice president, speaking after the opening ceremony yesterday, said that Ashland will continue to invest in China despite the current slowdown.

China’s urbanization, commitment to clean energy development, and an expanding automotive industry will benefit Ashland’s businesses here, he added.
