Bosch sees energy efficiency solutions as path to future growth in China
Bosch, a provider of automotive technologies and services, expects its double-digit growth in China will continue in forthcoming years with energy efficiency solutions one of its biggest growing businesses.
Last year, the German company recorded 18 percent growth in China with 41.2 billion yuan (US$6.6 billion) in revenue, making the country its second largest overseas market, the company said today.
The sales figure included up to 32 billion yuan generated by its automotive business in the OEM supply and aftermarket, which grew 28 percent last year, almost double the pace of the market average.
To keep its strong momentum going, the company said it will rely partly on energy-saving technologies, which have become one of the key differentiators for carmakers in China as the government steps up its efforts to fight pollution from vehicle exhaust emissions.
One of Bosch's targets is to help carmakers reduce fuel consumption of internal combustion-engines 20 percent by 2020 based on the 2012 figure.
Higher energy efficiency can be achieved by downsizing the engines in combination with turbo charging technologies. The company will open a new plant in Shanghai this year to localize the production of its latest turbo charging system co-developed with Mahle, said Peter Tyroller, the board member of Bosch responsible for Asia Pacific.
Having made about 1 million start-stop systems in China last year, which helps improve vehicle fuel economy by reducing the amount of time the engine spends idling, the company unveiled a more advanced solution called BRS at the ongoing Beijing Auto Show, which combines recuperation, torque boost, start-stop, and coasting to enable an extra 10 percent fuel economy improvement compared with the current start-stop system, the company said.
