Practical uses for Internet of Things

INTERNET of Things technology is being adopted for use in food safety and medical practices, scientists said at the China International Industry Fair in Shanghai yesterday.

A system has been developed to build an "intelligent farm." Under the system, a microchip will be inserted in livestock.

It records information such as the animal's age, feed stuff, farm and time of butchery.

The system helps food safety officials track down any problems.

The microchip has been inserted into 170,000 female pigs in the city. The data is transmitted to a control center for intelligent management. The system can alert farm officials and veterinarians with a text message when a pig's information is abnormal.

When a pig dies of disease, the system will inform the authorities to deal with the carcass properly and ensure the meat doesn't enter the food supply illegally.

Meanwhile an intelligent long-distance health monitoring network has been built in the city with trial use having begun in six communities in four districts.

More than 14,000 residents in the communities have signed up for the service.
