Pratt & Whitney seeks engine joint ventures

PRATT & Whitney, a United States aircraft engine supplier, is in talks with Chinese plane makers about setting up joint ventures in China to produce and assemble its latest engine.

"We have visited the Aviation Industry Corp of China and Commercial Aircraft Corp of China to discuss possible cooperation on our revolutionary aircraft engine PW1000G, and they have shown interest," said Pratt & Whitney President David Hess in an interview with Shanghai Daily yesterday.

"We are looking forward to setting up joint ventures in China to produce, assemble and test the engines and sell them to overseas markets," Hess said.

The cost-efficient PW1000G engine, which is due to enter service in 2013, can help an airline save US$1.5 million on each plane annually as well as save energy by 16 percent.

It has been chosen to power the Mitsubishi Regional Jet, Bombardier C-Series Aircraft and Irkut MC21 Aircraft, and has received 400 orders so far.

"We are confident that the engine will be chosen for A320 jets and Boeing 737 jets," Hess said.
