Pudong airport to handle more traffic
Pudong International Airport handled 11 percent more transit passengers in the first half of this year and is set to handle even more passengers as domestic and overseas airlines will use bigger aircraft such as the Airbus A380 to fly to Shanghai, the city’s airport operator said yesterday.
Between January and June, more than 1 million international passengers transferred at the Pudong airport, up 11 percent from the same period of last year, the Shanghai Airport Authority said in a statement.
The airport’s average daily takeoffs and landings hit a record high of 1,120 flights during the summer, the authority added.
“With the launch of the free trade zone in Pudong as well as the opening of the Shanghai Disney Resort, the airport is expected to handle more passengers to become an air traffic hub in the Asia-Pacific,” said an official with the authority.
The airport has upgraded capacity and facilities to handle more A380 flights at its two terminals, the authority said.
The city’s Hongqiao International Airport will also be renovated because it serves as the backup airport for the A380 during bad weather.
