Shanghai’s robot output at US$3.2b by 2015

SHANGHAI aims to boost the output value of its industrial robot sector to 20 billion yuan (US$3.2 billion) by 2015, further enhancing the city as a key cluster for robot makers in China.

The sector’s output amounted to nearly 10 billion yuan last year in Shanghai, home to robot makers Swiss company ABB and Germany’s KUKA, said the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information.

The government will keep encouraging factories in Shanghai to use robots as this “will help accelerate transformation of Shanghai’s growth model,” Xu Ziying, vice director of the commission, said yesterday.

KUKA earlier this month opened its first overseas plant in Shanghai, which allows the firm to cut delivery time to customers in Asia. Last year, the city formed the Shanghai Robot Industry Association to promote the sector’s development.
