US FDA reveals secret TCM formula
TRADITIONAL Chinese medicine maker Yunnan Baiyao Group Co's efforts to keep its formula secret might prove in vain as its formula can be found on the United States Food and Drug Administration website.
Producers of Class-1 protected traditional Chinese medicine are entitled not to disclose their exact formula and recipe under China's Ministry of Health's Traditional Medicine Protection Regulation.
"The company is looking into this matter, and we will have an official statement on this very soon," Yin Pinyao, general manager of Yunnan Baiyao Group, told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
A document on the US FDA website listed nine ingredients of Yunnan Baiyao Ding, a dietary supplement based on the Yunnan Baiyao formula. The ingredients are prohibited from being disclosed publicly in China.
"Yunnan Baiyao has to get approval from the US FDA to enter the US market," said an unidentified researcher from Venture Pharm, a joint venture contract research body of innovative drugs.
Originally developed by Qu Huanzhang in 1902, Yunnan Baiyao has been designated as a Class-1 protected TCM in China and the list of ingredients is marked "national secret" on the packs of the medicine sold on Chinese mainland. The market is awash with rumors that the information was leaked by Yunnan Baiyao's competitors.
Amazon.com's website discloses Yunnan Baiyao Capsule's ingredients while they are stamped "secret" on the Chinese company's official website.
