US paper maker plans new factory

KIMBERLY-CLARK, a United States maker of paper and care products, yesterday said it is planning a new plant in China to cash in on rising demand in the world's fastest growing consumer market.

"Business in China continues to grow dramatically, and we could not build factories fast enough to supply the market," Robert Black, group president of Kimberly-Clark International, said on the sidelines of the company's Senior Leader Forum in Shanghai to map out an international strategy.

Black said the company has shortlisted several sites but no decision has been made yet.

At present, there are three manufacturing plants in Shanghai, Beijing and Nanjing. But production capacity has fallen short of consumer needs as sales in China jumped more than 40 percent last year despite the global economic downturn. In comparison, full-year sales globally in 2009 fell 1.5 percent from a year earlier to US$19.1 billion as consumers tightened their belts amid the global economic slump.
