Unilever goes inland, adding facility in Sichuan
Unilever, the world's second largest consumer goods maker, is going to sign an agreement tomorrow to build a 300-million-yuan (US$47.6 million) industrial park in southwestern Sichuan Province as it expands inland.
The first phase of the industrial park, 26.7 square kilometers in size, will enable Unilever to manufacture its full range of products.
The park will be the British-Dutch conglomerate's third manufacturing facility in China besides one in Hefei, Anhui Province, and one in Tianjin, as Unilever strives to deliver a fivefold China business growth by 2020.
Emerging markets are playing a key role in Unilever's global business strategy," Unilever Global CEO Paul Polman said during the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Tianjin earlier this week.
In the first half of this year, Unilever's global sales rose 11.5 percent to 25.4 billion euro while profit gained 1 percent to 2.4 billion euro. More than 60 percent of its sales come from emerging markets.
Early this year, the company put into operation a 180-million-yuan toothpaste plant in Hefei to enlarge its output capacity.
Alan Jope, president for Unilever North Asia, said in April that the company will maintain a double-digit growth in China sales to reach 50 billion yuan a year by 2020.
Currently, personal care products contribute two thirds of Unilever China's revenue while food makes up the rest.
