BesTV, Orange agree on IPTV work

BesTV New Media, a subsidiary of Shanghai Media Group, signed a memorandum of understanding with France's Orange yesterday to cooperate in the development of IPTV and other network convergence technologies.

The deal was the latest to focus on converging computer, TV and mobile phone after Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday urged the convergence of the triple network be accelerated in China.

According to the MOU signed in Shanghai, Orange will broadcast content of the Shanghai World Expo, provided by BesTV, across its European footprint. Both sides will cooperate on IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) through technology and capital.

"The fast pace of technical changes is rapidly changing the way we watch TV," said Didier Lombard, Orange's chairman and chief executive.

"The partnership aims to investigate ways in which media and telecom companies can harness the potential of modern technologies to provide users simple homogeneous interfaces and rich, interactive content."
