China to tighten content control of TV series

CHINA will strengthen regulation on the themes of TV series through banning online game and literature-related subjects and copycats of overseas TV series, a newspaper reported today, citing industry regulator the State Administration of Radio Film and Television.

Though the news hasn't been confirmed, SARFT has been criticized by netizens because of its super-tight content control, which will force the audience to turn away from TV.

The SARFT has strengthened regulations on six categories of subjects, including revolution history, home conflicts, costume historical drama, business competition, clone of overseas dramas and dramas adapted from online literature and online games, The Beijing News reported, citing an unidentified source from SARFT.

Under the rules, dramas adapted from online literature are not recommended and dramas from online games are not forbidden, according to the report.

SARFT didn't answer phone calls made by Shanghai Daily today. Those six categories are the hottest sectors of TV series with millions of audience in China.
