Praise for a jewel among residential complexes

Shanghai Daily did an interview with three families living in The Emerald, a large Western-style garden villa development in Pudong, about their life in Shanghai and The Emerald.

Q1: What were the key elements that made The Emerald a standout when you chose a home in Shanghai?

Deepa Dutt: The Emerald offers a beautifully landscaped compound with North American-style villas and fantastic amenities, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, fully equipped gyms and clubhouse facilities that offer all kinds of fitness and aerobic classes. The community is a safe and secure area for children to play in. We are from the United States and we chose The Emerald because it seemed most like home.

We have a dog and we really enjoy taking her for walks around The Emerald neighborhood.

The Emerald management also offers extremely good service with regards to repairs and other requirements.

The Emerald also organizes a great farmer’s market on Thursdays where you can buy fresh produce, meats, seafood and specialty Mexican products. There is an extremely well-stocked grocery store right outside the compound, perfect for stocking up on essentials or last-minute items for a dinner party.

Q2: There are residents from almost 40 countries with different cultures, customs and habits living in The Emerald. Do you find this makes for a more vibrant environment?

Julie Parson: This is one of the things I have most enjoyed about living here at The Emerald. There is really a great feeling of community here. During our seven years here we have seen a lot of people come and go but have enjoyed each and every one of them. We have great friends from Brazil, Spain, Norway, Finland and Sweden as well as the UK and have had a great social life with lots of parties!!

Deepa Dutt: We used to organize impromptu block parties, including our own haunted house for Halloween and an Easter egg hunt. Our kids would all hang together on weekends. The Emerald has also organized many parties — including a Welcome Back Party, Halloween Party, Celebrity Bash Party, One Night in Old Shanghai among others — which offer great opportunities to meet new people.

Q3: As a busy executive, it must be important for you to find a living compound that provides a safe, family-friendly, homey and dynamic environment for you and your family. What has The Emerald done to create such environment?

Richard Parson: Often we remark that living on The Emerald must be how life was 40 years ago, when children could play in the street and come and go between friends’ houses without a care. Anybody wanting to see what The Emerald is like should visit between 7:30am and 8am when the kids are all heading to school or to their buses, or after 4pm when the kids are unwinding after the school day. This is when you get a sense of what a great lifestyle The Emerald provides. We feel that the energy The Emerald management puts into upgrading the infrastructure, maintaining the houses and organizing social and festive events must make The Emerald a leading contender for the best neighborhood in the city.

Jim Dexter: The inherent qualities of The Emerald provide a genuinely safe place and a family feel. This means I have one less thing to worry about — which is great.

While it may not always be obvious to some, it has become clear to us how important creating this environment is to the management at The Emerald, and how hard they work at it. We have noticed and appreciate it. Well done.

Q4: You’ve been living in The Emerald for quite a few years now? What are the most important reasons for staying such a long time?

Julie Parson: This is our seventh year in The Emerald and during that time we have seen many changes and improvements in the facilities at The Emerald.

Besides the high level of customer care offered we have seen another gym added in Clubhouse 2, as well as two new yoga/aerobics rooms. The restaurant in Clubhouse 1 has been renovated and a new coffee shop opened. We have also seen big improvements in the infrastructure around The Emerald with the opening of new roads. We can now do the trip to Jinqiao in 15 to 20 minutes and I can get to Xintiandi in Puxi in 25 to 30 minutes.
