Wheelock Square showcases sustainable credentials as its first office tenant achieves leed gold certification
Wheelock Square is raising the bar for sustainable building techniques, contemporary urban aesthetics and premium Grade A office amenities in China. The 61-story tower in downtown Puxi recently welcomed the first office to achieve LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council. This award to the office of global architecture and design firm NBBJ recognizes Wheelock Square as a pioneer of sustainable building design in the dynamic commercial city of Shanghai.
Aside from its prestigious address, iconic architecture and sophisticated management services, leading global companies are choosing Wheelock Square for its eco-friendly design. Wheelock Square's myriad sustainable features create a healthy, vibrant working environment for employees and support tenants wishing to obtain internationally recognized green office certifications as part of their corporate social responsibility programs.
Sustainable Architecture
Designed by award-winning New York-based architectural firm, Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF), Wheelock Square exemplifies the ideal combination of eco-friendly concept and cutting-edge facilities.
"Wheelock Square is innovative, elegant and sustainable by design. It is the perfect representation of style, quality and corporate pride in today's modern working environment," says Robert Whitlock, KPF principal and chief architect of Wheelock Square.
Championing environmental architecture in Shanghai, Wheelock Square has utilized a low-emissivity (Low-E) glass fa?ade that maximizes natural light penetration into the building and helps prevent heat loss. High ceilings and skyline views through expansive windows also improve the sense of space and well-being for people working in the building.
Additional green design elements include water-saving taps throughout the building, an HVAC indoor air quality system and standard energy efficient T5 lighting. A 24/7 building management system controls the efficiency of lighting, air-conditioning and energy usage. There is independent fresh air intake on all floors, and full waste recycling is also standard throughout the building.
Aside from Wheelock Square's landscaped gardens, the complex is bordered by a green belt comprising the historic Jing'an Temple and the grounds of the adjacent Children's Palace, offering a tranquil escape from downtown Puxi's urban density.
Wheelock Square's direct access to citywide public transport connections is another important environmental factor. It is also located within walking distance of Nanjing Road's residences, shops and public services, thereby reducing the impact of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution from personal car travel. All-underground car parking minimizes the urban heat island effect.
LEED Gold Offices
Thanks to Wheelock Square's eco-design blueprint, tenants are able to customize high-performance, healthy offices that satisfy the internationally recognized LEED green certification. Global architecture and design firm NBBJ has become the first office at Wheelock Square to achieve LEED Gold certification by the US Green Building Council.
"As an architectural and design leader in Asia and around the globe, NBBJ is committed to sustainable principles and is pleased to reflect those values in its Shanghai office design. The steps taken in successfully incorporating sustainability into the design of our offices set a benchmark for future projects and our clients. This achievement also proves that sustainability is both economically and practically achievable in the Shanghai market," says Nancy Chen, IIDA, senior associate of NBBJ Shanghai.
Conceived as a high-performance, high-quality work environment with the wellbeing of the staff paramount, NBBJ's sustainable office features an open plan to minimize the workstation footprint and encourage a sense of community. The absence of wall partitioning also reduces the need for artificial lighting by 15 percent. Careful attention has been paid to the selection of paints and other coatings to reduce the amount of toxic pollutants emitted, and 85 percent of equipment meets the Energystar qualification to optimize energy performance.
Japan's largest pharmaceutical company Takeda has recently committed to renting a 2,600-square-meter space in Wheelock Square. Takeda joins other high-profile multinational and domestic tenants, including Toyota Tsusho, Hays, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Sheppard Mullin, DP Architects, Toshiba, Mitsui, Clarkson Asia, LG Chem, Conde Nast, Burberry, Coach, Shiseido and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), that call Wheelock Square home.
