Despondent mood stays

MORE than half of Chinese home buyers don't expect sales to grow sharply in September and October, the traditional high season for property sales, while more than 44 percent of respondents said they have no plans to clinch any deals during the period, a national survey done by major real estate website Soufun.com showed yesterday.

Interestingly, home buyers in less developed areas seemed to be more optimistic about the market while those in the more developed parts of the country hoped for price discounts. For example, in Shanghai more than 70 percent of people taking the online survey said they expected prices to fall soon.

According to the Soufun survey which covered 46 cities nationwide, 53.5 percent of the respondents did not believe there would be a sales boom over the next two months. Less than 25 percent believed sales would flourish during the two months while the rest said they didn't expect any major change in sales during the period.

Home buyers in northeastern areas where economies are relatively less developed are most bullish about a property boom in the two months. Their peers in more developed east and south China are doubtful about a boom.
