Emphasis on low-cost homes

NEARLY 80 percent of the 218,000 hectares of land that the Chinese government may offer for home building nationwide this year will be for affordable housing as well as small- to medium-sized apartments, a senior official at the Ministry of Land and Resources said yesterday.

More land is being released this year as 26,300 hectares were finally injected into the market last year out of the 184,700 hectares originally planned, Liao Yonglin, head of the ministry's land use management department, said in Beijing.

Affordable housing developments and small- to medium-sized homes will be built on 171,300 hectares, or 78.6 percent of the total land area set to be released this year. This is a rise of 2 percentage points from 2010. Land meant for only affordable housing projects should reach 77,400 hectares, compared to 32,400 hectares offered nationwide last year.

The ministry will continue to implement the central government's policies to combat rapidly-rising home prices by raising the land supply for housing, with a particular focus on ensuring supply to develop affordable homes, Liao said.

China has earlier announced a target of building 10 million units of affordable housing this year.

In Shanghai, 1,200 hectares of land will be released for housing this year, up 100 hectares from 2010, the land watchdog said last month.

Affordable housing and small- and medium-sized apartments will be built on 840 hectares, or 70 percent of the city's total, according to the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Planning and Land Resources.
