Residences take over 50% of land sales

Land sales are likely to exceed 14 million square meters in Shanghai this year, and over 50 percent of the plots are designated for housing development, a major estate chain has found.

By mid December, sales of a total gross floor area of 13.12 million square meters of land have been transacted in the city, compared to 12.4 million square meters during the entire 2009, according to a recent research by Shanghai Hanyu Property Co Ltd.

Of that, land for residences reached 6.88 million square meters, or 52.4 percent of the city's total.

Land designated for home building continued to be the most sought after by real estate developers as most of them were sold at notably higher prices while those allocated for commercial uses often drew a lukewarm response from the market, Hanyu research showed.
