Two thirds surveyed feel home prices still too high

ABOUT two thirds of Chinese polled in a survey still consider home prices too high to afford and nearly 60 percent of the respondents believe it is not a good time to buy a house this year, according to a report released this week by the Guangzhou Public Opinion Research Center.

The center made a random telephone survey on 5,000 people in 23 provinces and four municipalities. They shared same views on the issue, the report said.

More than one third of the respondents think home prices remained "stable" in the first half of this year despite the implementation of tough rein-in policies in the real estate sector for two years. Nearly 30 percent of people feel home prices "increased" during the period, according to the survey.

In particular, people in central China and third-tier cities feel strongly that home prices increased in the first half of this year, compared to those in major cities in the eastern and western parts of China.

The government imposed home-purchase restrictions in about 40 cities around the country more than a year ago and the ban is vigorously enforced in first- and second-tier cities.
