Aircraft auction ends dismally as 1 plane sold

China’s first online aircraft auction ended yesterday on a dismal note as only one of six airplanes was sold.

A total of 66 people had bid for the Jabiru J160C, whose bidding started at 1 yuan (16 US cents). It was sold for 1.91 million yuan on Taobao.com, China’s largest e-commerce platform.

But there were no buyers for the other five aircraft put up for auction, including a Eurocopter EC120 Colibri helicopter, the most expensive with a bid price of 16.8 million yuan, and a second-hand Robinson R44 light helicopter with a fixed price of 3.5 million yuan.

The winning bidder has to pay a deposit of 30,000 yuan within three days or the deal will be canceled. The 2,000-yuan deposit that was paid before the auction, launched by Taobao and aviation information website Sirenji.com on Thursday, will be forfeited and donated. The deal can be halted if the buyer is not satisfied after doing an on-the-spot inspection.
