Airline gains visa privilege from Wellington
PASSENGERS of China Southern Airlines can get visas faster and easily after the carrier signed a cooperative agreement with the New Zealand government yesterday to bring more Chinese tourists to the country.
China Southern passengers do not need to show proofs of property or employment and can get their visas faster, New Zealand's tourism and immigration officials said after signing the agreement in Guangzhou, where China Southern Airlines is based.
In addition, Chinese travelers can also enjoy discounts in shops and tourist destinations in New Zealand by showing the airline's boarding card.
"Our Guangzhou-Auckland daily flight has become a major route for the company and is in high demand by both Chinese and foreign travelers," said Tan Wangen, president and CEO of China Southern Airlines. Tan said the company will use the best aircraft and crews on the route.
Since the Chinese airline launched the direct daily flight in April 2011, the service has boosted the number of Chinese tourists to New Zealand by almost 40 percent, according to the Auckland Airport.
New Zealand has benefited from the service as Chinese tourists contributed to the country's economy, airport CEO Adrian Littlewood said in a statement.
"This significant increase in visitor arrivals and spending is a clear indication that increasing air links between the countries is an important factor in growing tourism revenue," said Littlewood.
China Southern Airlines is considering increasing its Auckland-Guangzhou service to two flights a day.
