Airlines raise fuel fees on NDRC move

MAJOR Chinese airlines have raised fuel surcharges for domestic flights from yesterday after the National Development and Reform Commission increased aviation fuel costs by 220 yuan (US$33) per ton to 5,690 yuan on Tuesday.
The nation's three biggest carriers - China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Air China - and six other domestic airlines said they would raise fuel fees to 40 yuan from 20 yuan per person for flights over 800 kilometers, and to 70 yuan from 40 yuan for those longer than that distance.
Other carriers, including Juneyao Airlines, Xiamen Airlines, Beijing Capital Airlines Co also raised fuel surcharges by the same margin.
The three largest carriers are estimated to each spend about 660 million yuan more on aviation fuel annually, according to the average volume of fuel they spent last year, which was 3 million tons.
Fuel surcharges for disabled soldiers and children who pay half the adult fare will be unchanged.
The NDRC, the country's top economic planner, top raised prices of gasoline by 230 yuan and diesel by 220 yuan a ton from Tuesday.
