Airports handle 20% more passengers

CHINESE mainland airports handled 486 million passengers last year, rising 20 percent from a year earlier, the Civil Aviation Administration of China said yesterday.

Passengers made 449 million trips on domestic routes, rising 22 percent from a year earlier, and 37.05 million trips on international routes, declining 1.9 percent, the administration said.

"Considering volume driven by the World Expo and the Asian Games, we project Chinese air travel to grow 18 percent this year and push load factors to a record high of 79 percent with a corresponding double-digit increase in airfares," said Ally Ma, a Citigroup analyst.

Fourteen out of 166 mainland airports each delivered more than 10 million passengers last year, compared with 10 airports in 2008. Among them, passenger volume in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou accounted for 32.8 percent of the total, the aviation regulator said.

Fifty-one airports delivered more than 1 million passengers each last year, compared with 47 airports in 2008.

The airports handled 9.46 million tons of cargo last year, rising 7.04 percent on year.
