Alibaba eyes upgrading smart logistics

ALIBABA aims to upgrade China’s smart logistics network to help merchants and manufacturers tap the booming demand for logistics and delivery services, chairman Jack Ma told a conference in Hangzhou yesterday.

The e-commerce giant’s logistics affiliate Cainiao will use its technology and smart logistics to help companies cut logistics cost significantly to under 5 percent of the value of China’s gross domestic product, Ma told the Global Smart Logistics Summit.

“We will work with partners and enable delivery and warehouse facilities to use smart technology to help business adapt to the new economic age,” Ma said.

Cainiao wants to expand to serve more manufacturers in other sectors to help them benefit from upgraded logistic infrastructure beside meeting online merchants’ booming demand for courier delivery.

Cainiao unveiled plans to build logistics hubs in major cities including Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Moscow and Liège in Belgium that will be part of a global delivery network to allow merchandise to be delivered anywhere within 72 hours.

The president of Cainiao Network, Wan Lin, also pledged to use Internet of Things technology to help warehouse operators detect abnormalities and enhance efficiency.
