American wants JAL exclusively
AMERICAN Airlines has proposed making JAL its exclusive Asian partner to keep it from Delta's clutches.
American Chief Executive Gerard Arpey said yesterday he has told Japan Airlines that American will not compete for connecting passengers to other points in Asia if the Japanese carrier remains American's partner in the Oneworld alliance.
Delta and its SkyTeam partners have offered US$1 billion to lure JAL from American. American has countered with a US$1.1 billion offer to struggling JAL to remain its partner.
Arpey said after a meeting in Tokyo that the offer would involve American feeding traffic between the United States and Japan but not elsewhere in Asia.
Arpey said Delta Air Lines, which has a Tokyo hub, might siphon JAL's Asian customers if they team up.
