Aviation sector nets 18% rise in profit
CHINA'S civil aviation industry, including airlines and airports, earned 11.47 billion yuan (US$1.76 billion) in net income in the first four months of this year, an annual rise of 17.7 percent.
Domestic carriers earned 8.83 billion yuan in the period, up an annual 34.1 percent, while profit of airports plunged 49 percent to 1.1 billion yuan, the Civil Aviation Administration of China said in a statement.
In April, net income of the industry surged an annual 53.8 percent to 4.16 billion yuan, and revenue gained 23.5 percent to 39.88 billion yuan, the CAAC said.
Domestic airlines flew 24.37 million passengers last month, a growth of 13 percent from a year earlier, and carried 2.6 percent more cargo at 478,300 tons.
Analysts cited the minor rise in cargo to the slower recovery of the global economy since the start of the year.
Travel and trade demand between China and earthquake-hit Japan have slowed too.
Passenger volume on China-Japan routes declined 32.2 percent in April, and cargo volume shed 7.9 percent from a year earlier, the CAAC said.
In April, Air China, the country's flagship international carrier, carried 4.16 million passengers, up 9.5 percent annually, and 105,579 tons of cargo, up 13.4 percent.
China Southern Airlines, the country's largest carrier by fleet, flew 96,590 tons of cargo in April, an annual rise of 7.1 percent, and 6.76 million passengers, up 7 percent.
China Eastern Airlines, the No. 2 carrier, flew 115,120 tons of cargo last month, an annual drop of 13.28 percent, and flew 5.88 million passengers in April, a gain of 15.5 percent annually.
