Beijing to have a second international airport in 2016
BEIJING plans to start building its second airport this year and put it into service in 2016, a senior official of the Beijing Capital International Airport said yesterday.
The first phase of the new airport is designed to handle 40 million passengers a year, said Zhang Guanghui, general manager of BCIA, at the sideline of the China Aviation Congress in Shanghai.
Zhang said BCIA and the Beijing Municipal Government will both invest in the second airport located in the city's southern Daxing District, but its investment size has not been decided.
The Beijing Capital International Airport is expected to handle more than 80 million passengers this year, up 8 percent from last year but slower than last year's growth rate of 13.1 percent, Zhang said.
Passenger volume at Shanghai's two airports is also expected to grow at a slower pace this year after the World Expo ended last year, said Yuan Shunzhou, vice president of Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, yesterday.
"Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport are expected to handle about 70 million passengers this year, same as last year," said Yuan.
The Hongqiao terminal is expected to handle about 32 million passengers this year, compared with 31.6 million in 2010, he said.
"It can be seen as a growth if this year's passenger volume is the same as last year because travel demand peaked in 2010 with the opening of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo," Yuan said.
To develop revenue sources, Yuan said the Hongqiao airport will make efforts to expand non-aviation businesses such as retailing.
"Non-aviation business revenue will account for 40 percent of this year's total revenue, and we will be redesigning the shopping area in Terminal One in two to three months," he said.
