Boat show sails away with loads of orders
THE 17th China (Shanghai) International Boat Show was wrapped up yesterday with contract volume more than doubling to 2.2 billion yuan (US$349 million), organizers said.
More than 32,000 people visited the four-day exhibition, 40 percent more than last year. More than half of them are overseas visitors.
Last year, orders placed at the exhibition were worth 1 billion yuan.
Covering an area of 38,000 square meters, the exhibition attracted 450 exhibitors from home and abroad, bringing 500 yachts to the exhibition site.
"China's yacht industry is expected to rise an average of 30 percent in the next few years and will have an annual industry value of more than 200 billion yuan," Yang Xinfa, director general of the yachts and ships branch of the China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry, said at the opening ceremony last week.
Exhibitors are betting on increased spending on leisure activities by Chinese consumers.
The most expensive yacht sold at the exhibition was a 40 meter-long vessel by Sunseeker, costing 140 million yuan.
Medium-priced vessels were also popular among buyers. Brunswick sold 13 Harris220s, each valued at 320,000 yuan.
China currently has 28 yacht clubs with 1,200 to 1,500 vessels, according to a report released by the China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry yesterday.
