Boeing’s new Dreamliner completes maiden flight after Shanghai takeoff

BOEING’S newest medium-sized 787-900 Dreamliner has taken off from Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport on its commercial worldwide debut.

It was operated by Air New Zealand on its Shanghai-Auckland route.

The longer 787-900 arrived in Auckland yesterday. It has 302 seats, about 50 more than its predecessor, the Boeing 787-800.

“The new airliner is expected to help increase travel from Shanghai to New Zealand by about 12 percent annually,” Nick Judd, general manager of Air New Zealand China said today.

The 787-900’s fuselage is 6 meters longer and its range is about 550 kilometers greater than the 787-800, Boeing has said. It uses 20 percent less fuel and produces 20 percent less emissions than similarly sized airplanes, according to the company.

The windows are 65 percent larger than most other passenger aircraft and electronically dimmable glass replaces traditional window shades. Higher humidity and a more efficient air purification system will help passengers feel more comfortable throughout the flight, Boeing has said.
