COMAC seals order for 30 C919 jets

THE Commercial Aircraft Corp of China (COMAC) announced yesterday that the planemaker has sealed an order for 30 of its C919 jets during the Airshow China 2014 in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province.

The state-owned COMAC signed an agreement with China Merchants Bank’s leasing unit for the 30 single-aisle passenger aircraft, the country’s first large passenger jet.

To date, COMAC has secured 430 orders from 16 customers, mostly from China, but also including United States-based GE Capital Aviation Services and Irish budget carrier Ryanair.

The plane is set to make its maiden flight at the end of next year. Assembly work on the first aircraft began in Shanghai in September.

The development of the C919 is China’s attempt to enter the global aircraft market dominated by Boeing and Airbus.

COMAC has also sealed an order for another 23 ARJ21 regional jets at the airshow.

The Transportation Department of Congo-Brazzaville said it would buy three ARJ21 jets to become the first African buyer of the aircraft. Tianjin-based Langye aircraft leasing firm agreed to buy 20 ARJ21.

COMAC yesterday also released a forecast that China will need 5,541 passenger aircraft over the next 20 years.

The Chinese carriers will see their share in the global aviation market rise to 17 percent from 11 percent now.

COMAC also projected the number of passenger aircraft will double to nearly 39,800 worldwide by 2033.
