Carriers eye biofuel as alternative for aviation industry
MAJOR European airlines are keen to turn wasted cooking oil in China into biofuel as they seek to explore an alternative fuel, an industry summit in Shanghai heard yesterday.
Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines are interested to cooperate with energy firms to turn the huge amount of waste oil into biofuel, Bertrand Lebel, executive vice president of the Organization and Sustainable Development of Air France, told the China Aviation Industry Summit.
"We have a strong ambition in the Chinese market where only 2 percent of wasted cooking oil is recycled, compared with 70 percent in the Netherlands," said Dirk Kronemeijer, managing director of SkyNRG, a major jet biofuel supplier to more than 15 airlines.
In Shanghai, waste oil collected from restaurants totals more than 68 tons a day, said its food safety watchdog.
