Carriers see slow climb in traffic

PASSENGER traffic at two domestic airlines grew slower on an annual basis in September compared with August.
China Southern Airlines, the country's largest carrier by fleet size, flew 5.49 million passengers last month, an increase of 10.6 percent from a year earlier, according to a report on its Website yesterday.
But growth in August soared 32.9 percent versus the same month last year.
Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines, the country's third-largest carrier, carried 3.66 million passengers last month, an annual rise of 18.83 percent.
Its growth surged 50.63 percent in August from the same month last year, it said in an e-mailed statement.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific and its affiliate Dragonair said they flew 1.84 million passengers last month, down 2 percent from a year earlier as the global recession continues to hover over air demand.
"September saw a welcome seasonal upturn in demand for premium traffic with an improved share of the overall business, but volumes and yields are still well below previous years," said Tom Owen, general manager of revenue management at Cathay Pacific.
