Cheaper to fly as fuel charges cut

FLYING will become cheaper as Chinese airlines yesterday cut fuel surcharges on domestic routes for the second time this year due to lower jet fuel prices.

From Thursday the fuel surcharge on domestic routes of over 800 kilometers will be cut to 100 yuan (US$15.75) per passenger from the previous 130 yuan while that on other routes will be trimmed to 50 yuan, domestic carriers said on their websites yesterday.

Children will also pay a lower surcharge of 50 yuan, down 10 yuan, for domestic routes of over 800 kilometers, and 20 yuan for other routes.

The cuts are the result of a drop in the price of domestic jet fuel by 741 yuan per ton to 6,768 yuan this month due to the fall in the benchmark price of Singapore jet kerosene, according to the National Development and Reform Commission.

The NDRC and the Civil Aviation Administration of China issued rules on November 1 to allow airlines to adjust fuel surcharges only when the ex-factory price fluctuates more than 250 yuan a ton.
