China Eastern converts into full service provider
CHINA Eastern Airlines yesterday said its wholly owned e-commerce company in Shanghai’s free trade zone will offer online services to the carrier’s 100 million passengers.
The China Eastern E-commerce Co, set up with a registered capital of 50 million yuan (US$8.1 million), will offer passengers who are members of the airline’s frequent flyer program more convenient services on flight tickets, hotels and other products, said Tang Bing, the airline’s deputy general manger.
Passengers can access the services through the airline’s official website and its mobile phone application. They can also shop online through its onboard Wi-Fi service that was launched early this year.
“The establishment of the company marks the transformation of the carrier to a comprehensive service provider,” Tang said.
At a later date the e-commerce firm eyes investment to turn it into a joint venture, he said, without elaborating.
The airline’s logistics branch will be integrated into the e-commerce company.
The Shanghai-based airline yesterday also set up the Eastern Airlines Technic Co at Hongqiao airport for aircraft maintenance and repair.
