China Eastern tests flight using biofuel

CHINA Eastern Airlines yesterday completed its first test flight which used a new aviation biofuel developed by Sinopec, China's top oil refiner, according to both companies.

An Airbus 320 took 85 minutes to complete the test flight using the aviation biofuel after taking off from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport early yesterday morning.

The biofuel produced enough power during the test flight and "was no different from traditional fuel," the pilot of the test flight said in a statement.

China Eastern later announced its commercial flights will use the biofuel since the test was successful.

After the test, Zhang Hongying, a Civil Aviation Administration of China official, said biofuel is ready for commercial flights in China.

The biofuel, made with palm oil and recycled cooking oil, can cut the carbon emission of the aircraft, Sinopec said yesterday. Its spokesman Lu Dapeng said the refiner will also accelerate the commercial application of the biofuel.

China is now the fourth country in the world to have developed aviation biofuel, after the United States, France and Finland.
