China Southern set to build air hub in Beijing

CHINA Southern Air Holding Co plans to build an air hub in Beijing by setting up an operations headquarter and a customer service center in the capital's second international airport that is coming up in Daxing District.

The parent of China Southern Airlines will use 200 aircraft, including A380 jets, in the Beijing market within 10 years, according to a strategic agreement signed by the group and the Daxing District government yesterday.

The agreement says that China Southern, the country's largest carrier by fleet size, will help Beijing build its second international air hub while the Daxing government will open "green channels" for the carrier's investments.

Last year, Beijing Capital International Airport handled 74 million passengers, ranking second in the world.

A senior China Southern official said that it was hard for the company to launch new flights from the airport as it is almost saturated, so the carrier will make use of the new airport to enhance its presence in Beijing.

The city plans to start construction of the second airport this year, which will be operational in 2016, according to Beijing airport officials.
