China sparkles for business jets

AIRBUS eyes half of China's business jet market as it seeks to tap the country's strong economic growth, the Europe-based aircraft maker said yesterday.

Airbus has orders for 25 business jets from the Asia Pacific, of which 20 are from China, and the plane maker estimated the country will need five large business jets, which can seat more than 15 passengers, annually in the coming years. Airbus has an order book for more than 160 business jets globally.

"China's gross domestic product is forecast to grow at more than 8 percent a year," said John Leahy, chief operating officer of Airbus Customers. "As economic growth is the main driver of air travel, this means that there is an important and expanding market for business jets in the country, as well as throughout the region."

He said Airbus expects "to gain more than half of the market share in China, which has the biggest potential in the Asia-Pacific region."

The Chinese mainland has nearly 50 business jets for government, corporate and private clients.
