Civil aviation industry posts 364% year-on-year growth
CHINA'S civil aviation industry, including airlines and airports, earned 6.48 billion yuan (US$952 million) last month, soaring 363.5 percent from a year earlier bolstered by a rising demand, according to the country's aviation regulator.
Airlines contributed 5.52 billion yuan to the industry in July and airports earned 520 million yuan. Profits of other related companies totaled 440 million yuan, the Civil Aviation Administration of China said today.
In July, domestic carriers delivered record 25.47 million passengers, up 21 percent from a year earlier, and 445,400 tons of cargo, up 23.6 percent. The average load factor reached 83.6 percent, 6.8 percentage points more than the same month of last year.
"The third quarter is generally a peak season for the aviation industry and we expect airlines to make more money in the period with surging demand and higher fares," said Yao Jun, an analyst at China Merchants Securities Co.
Yao estimated Air China will earn 4 billion yuan in the third quarter, with China Southern Airlines earning 2 billion yuan and China Eastern Airlines earning 2.8 billion yuan.
Air China, the country's flagship international carrier, delivered 4.35 million passengers last month, growing 22.5 percent on a yearly basis, and 91,300 tons of cargo, growing 19 percent.
Meanwhile, China Southern, the country's biggest carrier by fleet size, delivered 7.22 million passengers, up 18.4 percent, and 89,900 tons of cargo, up 32.8 percent.
China Eastern, the country's second-largest carrier, sent 6.3 million passengers in July, jumping 56.07 percent from a year earlier, and 114,130 tons of cargo, rising 54.81 percent.
In the first half of this year, the country's civil aviation industry earned 13.3 billion yuan in profit, surging 174 percent year on year.
